How the area converter works
Area units are the squares of length units, so every factor here is a length definition squared: one square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m², one square mile is 1,609.344² m². Conversions multiply your value into square metres — the base unit — then divide by the target unit. The two land units deserve special mention: a hectare is exactly 10,000 m² (a 100 m square), and an acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m², defined as 43,560 square feet. Traditional Indian units like the bigha are deliberately left out because their size varies from state to state — acres and hectares are the unambiguous choices for land records.
1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4046.8564224 m² · 1 hectare = 10,000 m²Frequently asked questions
Is anything I enter uploaded anywhere?
No. The arithmetic runs locally in your browser — nothing you enter is sent to a server, logged or stored. Only the value and selected units appear in the URL, so a shared link reproduces the exact conversion.
How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560 square feet — historically a furlong by a chain (660 ft × 66 ft). In metric terms that is 4,046.8564224 m², or about 0.4047 hectares. A quick sanity check: a football pitch is roughly 1.75 acres.
What's the difference between a hectare and an acre?
A hectare is metric: exactly 10,000 m², the area of a 100 m × 100 m square. An acre is imperial: about 4,047 m². One hectare is roughly 2.47 acres. Land records in India commonly use both, alongside regional units like the bigha, whose size varies by state — always confirm which definition a document uses.
